Thanks, Niklas, for your enlightening piece on market dynamics as it pertains to the creative field of writing. I’m so glad I had the chance to read your piece before launching into the futile waste of my time writing for the Medium forums, hoping and expecting to make money from my creative efforts…to be met with frustration, dismay and depression. I actually made $0.10 cents here one time. I was surprised I got that!
I’ve been writing here off and on, when I feel like coming here to read what’s being said, and actually have something to say in response — but I didn’t really expect to make money doing it. It’s taken me quite awhile to connect the dots and gain the enlightenment to know that people like Umair Haque aren’t just spouting out their political and social perspectives to get a rise out of some of the rest of us. They’re actually doing it to make some money.
I’m retired and coasting to the end of my horizon here — so I’ve missed the boat where my writing career might have gone. I’m not depressed or even dismayed. I should have found my missing self-confidence and started writing years ago. I didn’t, so I have no reason to be disappointed now.
But what you’ve shared with us here will give some folks a good clue about whether they should even make the effort to write in the Medium Forums, hoping for compensation. Clearly not gonna happen.
